About

Dr. Angie J.H. Zhu is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, advanced acupuncturist  and herbalist, registered with CCHPBC.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes all diseases are rooted from the imbalance of Qi which is a vital force of life. The abundant and smooth flow of Qi in the body is central to overall health. Illness and diseases occur when there are deficiencies and imbalances of Qi from disrupted, blocked, and unbalanced movement of Qi. These can be caused by eating the wrong food, unhealthy lifestyle, stress, aging, unhealthy environment.

Major functions of Qi are pushing, warming, defending, holding, and activating.  Here are some examples of the functions of Qi.

Qi is the propelling force for blood circulation. if Qi is weak, it will lead to blood stagnation causing choking of blood vessels and then hypertension in some people. Qi naturally gets weak with aging. That is why elderly people have high percentage of hypertension.

When people are exposed to the same virus, the ones with abundant Qi are not sick while those who are deficient in Qi fall sick. it illustrates the defending function of Qi.

The holding function of Qi means it makes the muscles, tendons, blood, saliva, bones etc staying in the right place. if Qi is weak, a child may have lots of saliva, a woman may have heavy menses, a man may have backache, a new mum may have prolapse.

Chinese medicine uses its four unique methods to form diagnosis: observation, listening, questioning and palpation. Once data is collected, practitioners differentiate the syndrome by applying specific frameworks.

The first consultation is usually lengthy. Dr. Angie asks a lot of questions about the client’s health history, current energy level, appetite, sleeping, frequency and texture of bowel movement, frequency and colour of urination, sweating, pain… She observes the tongue's colour, size, shape, coating…  She checks the pulse on both wrists to assess organ health. She traces down to the root problem of the client based on the information she gathered. Then she will tailor a treatment formula consisting of either acupuncture or herbal remedy or both.

Dr. Angie emphasize greatly about the role of food. Qi is made with the essence from food and fresh air breathed in.  She asks the detail of a client’s diet and gives advice and suggestion for the right food adjustment. For example, if a client has cold hands and feet and easy to catch cold, she will suggest the client to take food warming in nature, like beef, chicken, onion, cherry, ginger and to void food cooling in nature, like cow milk, strawberry, pork, mint.

when it comes to exercise, she would suggest doing moderately, stop when you are going to sweat, In Chinese medicine, Qi is lost along with sweat or blood. there are more ingredient in sweat than pure water or tea. Overusing muscles or tendons are just like over stretching rubber bands.

She also considers the impact of climate. She uses moxibustion for most of her clients who live in Greater Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Geologically the climate in these two places is cold and wet which deplete a person’s yang. Yang is one of the two components of the vital Qi. Moxibustion expels cold, promotes blood circulation, detoxification and so forth. Clients who have low energy and depressed experienced great effect from moxibustion.

Traditional Chinese Medicine plays a great role in preventing disease and maintain health. A person should always take the right food, follows the right lifestyle, lives in a healthy environment, adjusts constantly with the time, season and living place.
